1. Hitting Drills
with Jay Martel, San Diego State University Assistant Coach.
This is a "must-have" video for all coaches and players
that are looking to improve hitting! Coach Martel has numerous
years of experience at the local and regional level in San
Diego, coaching players of all ages and abilities and was
also a successful prep player and played professionally
with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. In this video,
Martel does an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating
different effective hitting drills including different Tee
Drills and Toss Drills. All of the drills help teach and
reinforce proper body positioning, bat control, head positioning,
and hand positioning. Teaching these techniques and using
repetitions allows players to use the entire field, which
will increase their batting averages. All of the drills
are ideal for team practices and many of the drills are
well-suited for players to use to perfect their hitting
skills on their own! 2003. 45 minutes. VHS
2. Hitting Mechanics with Jim Dietz, former San Diego State
University Head Coach, ABCA Hall of Fame 2002
Coach Dietz won over 1200 games in his 31 years of coaching
and was known for tremendous statistics in the win/loss
column, in his athlete's excellent academics, and for creating
numerous opportunities for his players. He was the college
coach to many future "big league" hitting sensations, including
Tony Gwynn, Mark Grace and Travis Lee. In this excellent
video, Dietz shares his wisdom and experience in order to
help you get the most out of what a hitter has and, using
what they already have, mold them into a more constant hitter
(versus changing everything that the hitter already does).
In this on-field demonstration video, Dietz shows how to
recognize the inside pitch, the outside pitch, a fastball,
and a change up and how to use this to create a constant
swing. Having a constant swing will allow your hitter to
use all fields and go with pitches. Also emphasized: teaching
players to hit with their hands and proper stride length.
This is a great hitting video! 2003. 55 minutes. VHS

Total Team Defense Drills with Jim Dietz, former San Diego
State University Head Coach, ABCA Hall of Fame 2002.
In this video, Coach Dietz lays out the practical steps
of organizing a championship defensive practice that is
efficient and keeps everyone involved. Dietz strongly emphasizes
the importance of a set daily routine so every player knows
each drill and achieves continuity in each practice. Dietz's
goal for each defensive practice is safety, concentration,
and pride, which he emphasizes here in six defensive drills
through discussion and on-field demonstration. His drills
start with the outfielders and work in to the infielders,
pitchers, and catchers. Areas covered include outfield/infield
communication, relays, spin-turns and rundowns, defending
the running game, bunt defense positions and execution,
and pitch-outs and pick-offs. In addition, a game called
"Speedball," invented at SDSU, shows how to add a little
fun to your practice while still maintaining the purpose.
Dietz shows how to create and plan an effective and efficient
defensive practice that achieves a flow and a daily routine
to help you be organized and get the most out of your practice
and players at any level! 2004. 49 minutes. VHS
2. Jim Dietz's Team Defensive Strategy with Jim Dietz, former
San Diego State University Head Coach, ABCA Hall of Fame
2002
Defense wins games and championships! Here, Coach Dietz,
with over 1200 wins in his college coaching career, shares
how to build a defensive strategy. In a lecture-style setting,
Dietz begins with his 10 rules of defense, emphasizing knowing
the opposition, your team, and combining aggressiveness
and control. He then gets into the "heart" of defensive
strategy by covering five defensive areas; bunt defense,
run defense, outfield defense, catcher defense, and pitcher
defense. In each of these sets he discusses and diagrams
individual responsibilities in various situations and set
plays, including sacrifice and squeeze bunts, pitch-outs,
1st and 3rd plays, and the "Gap" defense in the outfield.
A few major points of emphasis thoroughly explained here
are effective communication and using set plays with signs
and adequate preparation. This video is a great complement
to the team defense drills video, "Organizing Defensive
Practice," as it gives you a defensive strategy in all situations,
allowing you to create a well-prepared defensive team on
your way to victory at all levels! 2004. 55 minutes. VHS

some important routines pitchers can use between starts
to get ready for a game. Routines include bullpen, short-box,
long-toss, pre-game, and, often overlooked, the between
innings routine. Each routineis carefully taught using diagrams
of pitch counts, which pitches to throw in a certain routine
and mechanics are stressed. Throughout the video, Sinacori
discusses the significance of mound presence (the amount
of control the pitcher has while on the mound). He reveals
several examples of good mound presence you can use during
a game. This tape is a comprehensive collection of all the
vital components needed to be a confident and prepared pitcher
at any level! 2004. 49 minutes. VHS
2. Pitching Mechanics and Delivery Drills with Chris Sinacori,
Arizona State University Pitching Coach.
Every coach knows that the key to successful pitching is
the use of proper mechanics. The mechanics demonstrated
by Coach Sinacori in this video will give your pitcher a
clean and solid delivery, increase velocity, and limit the
chance of injury. This video teaches the appropriate mechanics
for the full wind up delivery and out of the stretch. Sinacori
also reveals drills that can be used individually or as
a team to implement these mechanics. These are the same
drills used by the Arizona State pitching staff, runner-up
in the 1998 college world series. These drills include rotation
drills, which focus on keeping balance on the plate, mirror
drills, which can help a pitcher with their overall delivery,
and stride trainer drills, which solidify a pitcher's approach
to the plate. The pitching mechanics stressed here will
polish your delivery and take you to a level in pitching
that you have not imagined! 2004. 47 minutes. VHS
3. Holding Runners and Fielding the Position with Chris
Sinacori, Arizona State University Pitching Coach.
Learn how to shut down the running game, keep your opponents
out of scoring position, and improve your defense by improving
your pitchers' fielding. With on-field demonstration, Sinacori,
a former pitching coach in the Phillies organization for
four years, shares his expertise on how to become a complete
pitcher by stressing the importance of often overlooked
facets of pitching and defense. He details a 4-step process
to holding baserunners on and keeping them guessing, and
to set up your defense to save runs. Sinacori also covers
the essential principles of pick-offs for both right and
left-handed pitchers; he then goes through pick-off plays
and moves for each base including the spin move, daylight
play, and the inside move. Next, Sinacori shows you how
to develop your pitchers to be a vital part of your team
defense through a pitcher's fielding practice routine. You
will learn the proper techniques for pitchers to field bunts
in the four most common bunt locations. In addition, you
will learn how to get your pitchers to cover first base
like its second nature to them, and also the essentials
to fielding and effectively starting a double play to solidify
your defense. This video will help you develop complete
pitchers and shut down your opponents with great infield
defense! 2004. 46 minutes. VHS
4. Situational Pitching and Recognizing Hitters with Chris
Sinacori, Arizona State University Pitching Coach.
Chris Sinacori shares the secrets to becoming a successful
pitcher which helped him win a gold medal as a member of
the USA Baseball Junior Olympic team in 1988. Sinacori stresses
the importance of having three pitches in your arsenal that
will help you in game situations. Sinacori carefully demonstrates
grips, and emphasizes the mechanics and follow-through of
some popular pitches - such as the 4-seam fastball, 2-seam
fastball, cut fastball, curveball, slider, and multiple
forms of the change-up. Each pitch is broken down thoroughly
showing four angles of the hand to display positions for
right and left-handers. Sinacori then goes over situational
pitching and the thought processes a dominant pitcher must
go through. These are situations that any athlete could
be faced with from little league to high school level. Sinacori
informs you how to handle situations such as: runners on
base, pitching around a particular hitter, forcing the batter
to hit into a double play, hit and run situations and what
to look for when going against a batter in a bunt situation.
With the information on this video and a little practice,
you will help build an assertive pitcher that will be able
to work the plate and keep opposing batters unbalanced.
